Textile students at Oakham School were inspired by a visit from Old Oakhamian Lydia Farley, who has worked as a costumier in a variety of blockbuster films -including Thor, Fantastic Beasts and Paddington 2!
Lydia, who studied textiles at A-level at Oakham and completed an Art foundation and a Multi Media Textiles degree at Loughborough University, returned to the School to offer her advice to students eager to break into the film industry. They were particularly interested to hear her talk about her time working for the prestigious costume designer Coleen Attwood, on the costumes for Fantastic Beasts - which were awarded an academy award in 2017.
Lydia enthused about what it is like to work in the design team, workroom, fitting team, breakdown department, costume houses, and armourers. She also discussed how it differed being on location or being based in the studio and showed examples on how film sets and costumes need to complement each other.
“It was wonderful that Lydia took the time out of her busy schedule to come back to Oakham,” says Teacher of Textiles Mrs Wendy Greaves. “It’s impressive that she visited us in between working on a period drama and her next exciting project! The students certainly appreciated her knowledge, as well as her enthusiasm and honesty about working in this exciting and fast paced industry."
