A former Oakham School teacher has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement award from Leicestershire Rugby Union for Services to School Rugby.
Brian Welford was presented the award by the President of Leicestershire Rugby Union, Mr Hesford, at Oakham Rugby Club.
Brian, who taught at Oakham for 32 years (1969-2001), held a variety of positions across the School including Head of Rugby, Director of Sport and Deputy Head. Brian certainly made his mark on Oakham in a number of ways – not just on the rugby pitch. He was instrumental in the planning of the building of the new Sports Hall in 1972. This facility has benefited Oakhamains for many years and is now in the process of being refurbished to benefit future generations too.
Alongside his longstanding commitment to rugby at Oakham, Brian has been instrumental in developing rugby in Leicestershire and the Midlands. He was the Manager/Coach of Leicestershire Schools U18 squad for 32 years, the Chairman of Midlands Schools, the Midland Schools Divisional selector Chairman, as well being a Coach at Oakham RFC.
He is still incredibly active in the sport – he is the Leicestershire Schools representative to England Schools, a position he has held for 18 years! He is also the Chairman of the National Schools Competition Committee, and a member of the Leicestershire Schools Committee.
Whilst his services to rugby have been recognised, by both the RFU and Oakham RFC (he is life VP), this Lifetime Achievement is a well-deserved testimony to the time, effort, energy and dedication he has spent both on and off the pitch developing both the sport and its players.
