Our experienced team of catering staff care about giving pupils a balanced, nutritious diet. They understand children’s palates and enjoy finding new recipes to fit into their seasonal menus.
Pupils can choose from a wide selection of food at every mealtime, most of which is sourced locally. From breakfast, through to lunch, match teas, House snacks and then dinner, there’s always lots of choice. There is a sandwich bar, a pasta bar, a daily choice of different hot dishes, a salad bar, a daily hot vegetarian dish – the list goes on and on. Every effort is made to provide something for everyone.

We are mindful of pupils with different dietary requirements and are happy to accommodate their needs. The team know all of the students who have dietary requirements and they are personally looked after, without any undue ‘fuss’ – just as they would be at home.
Pupils eat together in the Barraclough dining hall, which is open 15 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the hub of the School. Events in the calendar are celebrated; so all pupils can enjoy themed lunches such as Burns Night and International Food Day. There is also a weekly pattern to life in the Barraclough that the boarders know and love. This includes carvery night, continental breakfast and Sunday brunch (from 8am-1pm), where pupils can choose when they eat. Some students even go in their pyjamas! There are also special occasions when the Barraclough team serve the food in Houses; for example, at pizza parties.
ISI rated Oakham’s food as ‘outstanding’.
Whilst it’s nice to receive such high praise, the team prefer to get feedback from the pupils themselves. An empty plate, healthy-looking children and a happy ‘buzz’ in the Barraclough, is what really matters to them.
